Some days, faith feels steady and strong. Other days, faith is simply choosing not to walk away. It's trusting that God is still there, even when we can't see very far ahead. Whatever kind of day you're having, you've made this little space for God, and that's enough. So settle into his presence and let us pray. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.

Jesus speaks these words in the middle of one of the most unsettling passages in the Gospels. And a love that grows cold in many hearts. It is not a gentle context. And it's precisely into that context that this promise is spoken. Not as a general encouragement, but as a word for people staring down real hardship. What strikes me first is the word endure. It doesn't mean triumph. And it doesn't mean feeling strong the whole way through. Endurance is what happens when strength runs out and you keep going anyway. It's a quieter, less glamorous kind of faithfulness than the dramatic breakthroughs we often picture. Endurance looks like showing up again tomorrow. It looks like praying when prayer feels dry.

Jesus doesn't promise that the pressure will let up. He promises that standing firm through it is where salvation is found. One of the most difficult and potentially one of the most faith-challenging events we can endure is the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, it's something all of us will experience in our lifetime. Some years ago, I moved in to take care of my elderly parents who were in declining health. One of my sisters, who had a lifelong struggle with mental health issues, was also living with them at the time. Although my father had been ill for several years, he died unexpectedly during one hospital today. My sister, who couldn't handle the loss, took her own life three months later. The day after her funeral, my mother was diagnosed with stage four cancer and given only weeks to live. Ultimately, I lost all three of them within months of each other. I really struggled going forward. I felt as if I were at the bottom of a deep, dark abyss. It was hard to just get up and get out of bed in the morning and put one foot in front of the other.

But I didn't give up. I prayed constantly. I read the scripture. And little by little the darkness lightened.

Finally, I began to see hope for a future without them in it. I endured, and I was saved. This scripture isn't really about the end times as a spectacle. It's about the daily, unspectacular work of staying faithful, staying kind, staying awake to what matters, especially when staying is hard. That, the verse suggests, is not a small thing. It's the whole thing.

Bring to God now the person or situation that needs the strength to keep going. With faith, we pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Let us pray. God who stays. When the way ahead is hidden, be the light beneath our next step. When prayer becomes only a whisper, hear what our hearts cannot say. When hope grows faint, keep its flame alive within us. Hold us close, Lord, until we can see the light again. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

There's one thing that really struck me about Umberto's words today that I think is worth carrying with us. Endurance doesn't always look brave or impressive. Sometimes it's just getting out of bed. Sometimes it's whispering one more prayer. Sometimes it's simply deciding, I'm still here, God. And maybe that's enough for today. May God in his goodness bless us in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
